CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

We are ALWAYS accepting submissions!

If the timing isn’t working or the topic isn’t a good fit for the upcoming issue, we will do our best to make it work for the next one.  (Example:  if you submit a piece about the Holy Souls in the spring, we’ll talk to you about holding it until the fall.)

As a traditional Catholic women’s magazine, we are looking for content that is light, spunky, whimsical, and inspiring.  Above all, it must be moral, modest, and well-written. We will consider reprints, so, for example, if you have a piece that you published on your blog that resonated well within your circle of friends and you think it deserves more attention, send it along and we will let you know whether or not it is a good fit.

We are currently a non-paying magazine, but don’t let that dissuade you from sending us your best. Just think of all the trad women out there starved for a fun, moral read that addresses them as trads.

Since this magazine is geared toward traditional Catholic women of all stripes, we don’t accept articles which are polemical or inflammatory.  While we won’t shy away from articles expressing concerns about everyday aspects of feminine lifestyle (e.g. whether or not we should immunize our children, or eat GMO foods), we are not interested in publishing pieces discussing the Modernist Crisis or political news events.

This is, however, a Catholic magazine.  We look forward to reading spiritual and inspirational pieces, but in respect to our resistance or rejection of the Modernist hierarchy, writers may think of Altar and Hearth as Switzerland.  There is no place here for promotion of your beliefs on the rightness or wrongness of this issue.

ARTICLES

We accept well-written articles of 1,000 – 2,000 words more or less (we’re very flexible on actual word count – these are guidelines), and interviews of 2,000 words or so.  Please read past issues to understand the overall tenor of the publication, to determine what topics have been recently covered, and whether or not your article will be a good fit for the magazine.

Please format your work using the following guidelines:

  • Size 12 Calibri font
  • Single spaced, no indents, one line between paragraphs
  • If you can provide one or more high quality photos, that is highly encouraged and appreciated.  (Interviews may require several)
  • In the subject line use the format: [SUBMISSION: CATEGORY (i.e. Fiction, Fashion, Spiritual Life): TITLE OF YOUR WORK]
  • Send your article as an attachment, preferably as a Microsoft Word file. If you do not have Word, send it as text in the body of the email.
  • Include a short bio (three to four sentences max) and tell us how you would like to be accredited.  Adding your photo makes the article more personal.  You may use a nom de plume if you prefer to protect your privacy.

Categories that we use in our issues are shown at the bottom of this  page.

We are open to acquiring staff writers.  If you have an idea for a regular column for one of the categories, please query us with a proposal.

PHOTOS

If you are submitting photos, please make sure the photos are your personally owned photos, are high quality, and are a minimum of 300 dpi.  Please do not send us photos without informing us of what/who they are or why you are sending them.

FICTION AND POETRY

Fiction:  Our goal is to inspire, amuse, and inform.  If your fiction does not fulfill one of those three, and/or is not in keeping with Catholic morals, this may not be the place for you.  If you’re in doubt whether your tone is too serious for us, send it in anyway and we’ll be glad to take a look.

  • Please do not send us your speculative fiction, pieces on teenage angst  or any mixture of the two (i.e. please no teen queen werewolf/vampire dramas).  We would like to see uplifting or funny pieces, not morbid, dark, or otherwise negative fiction.

Fiction pieces should be 2,000 – 2,500 words or less and follow the formatting guidelines provided above, but if your piece is slightly over, we may still be able to work with it.

Poetry:  We take rhyming poetry with clear messages and phrasing.  Funny, sweet, or clever is good; snide, snarky, or obscure is not.  This is not a magazine for haiku or blank verse.

Poetry pieces should be no more than 300 words (or two sides of a page, roughly) and follow the formatting guidelines provided above.
